It takes a village … or an island community

THANK YOU to all of our neighbors, friends and loyal Tierra Verde Next volunteers. Your help has been invaluable in getting the word out about Greenleaf’s plans to build too-tall industrial boat warehouses as the first thing you see when you cross the Tierra Verde Bridge. You’ve helped support our efforts to stop this oversized development.  Thanks to all of YOU we are continuing to fight.

Tierra Verde Next is all of us.

We are now in the next phase of the marina fight – and we need more volunteers and financial help to continue. We need people to handle tasks related to fundraising. We need building and street captains to help spread the word. And we need EVERYONE to join us as official Tierra Verde Next members. WE BELIEVE WE CAN WIN ON TWO FRONTS TO RIGHT-SIZE THIS PROJECT.

We appealed the decision in circuit court, arguing that the DRC, guided by staff, ignored evidence submitted by the opposition and exceeded its legal authority. Our attorneys are Weber, Crabb & Wein in St. Petersburg.

We are challenging permits. Environmental concerns must be argued separately through permitting process with multiple agencies. In our review of Greenleaf’s application, we found major problems that we believe will require changes to protect our environment. Boca Ciega Bay has some of the most protected water in Florida, including for water quality, seagrass beds, manatees, and other wildlife. We have spent significant time researching what is needed to win with the environmental agencies, and while we are confident, we are not experts. We must hire an environmental consultant to assist us.

THIS IS EXPENSIVE. Although we have received many generous donations, we have not yet reached our fundraising goal, now $200,000, to pay for lawyers and consultants.

The need is URGENT! Our response to the permit from Southwest Florida Water Management District is due July 12!
